As part of Dr. Armstrong's Lift Literacy Campaign, Readers on the Rise celebrated the joy, importance, and transformative power of reading with students across Portland Public schools.

ORABSE retirees had the privilege of visiting Woodlawn Elementary School, where they spent time reading with students in grades 1–5. Our volunteers were welcomed with enthusiasm, curiosity, and bright smiles, making the experience rewarding for both students and readers alike.

One participating educator shared:

"This time of year can feel especially busy for teachers. The Read-In program supports and complements the amazing work already happening in classrooms—it doesn't add to it. Instead, it creates meaningful opportunities for students to engage with reading and connect with caring adults who value literacy."

Together, we are building relationships, inspiring young minds, and reinforcing the critical role literacy plays in student success. Through shared stories and positive interactions, ORABSE retirees continue to demonstrate that reading is not only a fundamental skill but also a pathway to imagination, confidence, and lifelong learning.

We thank Debbie Fuller, Dr. Velma Johnson, Grace McKenzie, Jacquelyn Brown, Opal Moore, Renee Anderson and Vernette Dixon for giving their time and talents to support our Woodlawn students. And a special thanks to Sam Jones, our photographer.
